“It was Just a Wonderful Thing He Did”

On 9 July 2012 on the side of Route 64 in Bloomfield, New York, Nick Optis found a bag of money—$8,000 plus checks. The checks were made out to White’s Farm Market, which was very close, and Mr. Optis did the right thing and returned the money. Farm market owner Chip White said about Mr. Optis, “He won’t talk to the media. He’s too humble.” An employee had lost the money while taking it to the bank. A door of the employee’s vehicle was not closed properly, and when the employee opened and closed the door, the bag of money, which was in his pocket, fell out. Mr. White did not name and did not fire the employee, merely saying, “It was a learning mistake.” He did have praise for Mr. Optis, “It was just a wonderful thing he did.”
