A recording contractor needed a trombonist at very short notice, and so he called a bar where musicians hung out. Jack Raines, the only trombonist present at the time, took the phone call. The recording contractor said, “I need you to play bass trombone on a date starting in half an hour.” Mr. Raines said, “I’m sorry. I don’t play bass trombone.” The recording engineer said, “I’ll rent one for you. OK?” Mr. Raines replied, “Sure, and while you’re at it, rent me an alto saxophone. I don’t play that, either.”
