On 18 March 2014, Redditor premiumpunani asked,”Is there a distress signal you can give a cop to let them know you are in trouble?”
There is no universal distress signal; if there were, the predators would soon learn it and it would no longer be useful.
However, AyCarrumba wrote, “Here’s a good one from a real-life incident: This was a female who was the victim of domestic violence, she was in fear of her life and her partner was present and threatening her. Her voice conveyed a lot of that fear: She alerted the police by making the following phone call:
“‘Hello, I’d like to book a taxi please. … I know. … Yes. … Yes. … I’d like a taxi as soon as possible. … (Her Address) … Into town. … Ok, thank you very much.’
“It only really makes sense if you know what the operator (who was fantastic) said:
“‘Hello, I’d like to book a taxi please.’
“‘This is the emergency services, not a taxi company.’
“‘I know.’
“‘Do you need the police?’
“‘Yes.’
“‘Is there someone there threatening you?’
“‘Yes.’
“‘Ok, I need your address, just pretend you’re booking a taxi.’
“‘I’d like a taxi as soon as possible.’
“‘Tell me where you are now.’
“She gave her address.
“‘Ok, I’ve got that, just say, “Into town.”’
“‘Into town.’
“‘I’m sending two cars right now, I’ll make sure they approach silently, they’re about five minutes away.’
“‘Ok, thank you very much.’
“Click.”
