In July 2014, Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc attacked “moral corruption” in a speech and stated how a moral woman should act: The moral woman “will not laugh in public. She will not be inviting in her attitudes and will protect her chasteness.” Turkish and other women did not see what was morally corrupting about laughing in public, and they started posting photos of themselves doing just that on Twitter, using hashtags such as #direnkahkaha, which can be translated as “resist, laugh.” Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the main rival of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the August 2014 election, feels differently from the Prime MInister. He said, “We need to hear the happy laughter of women.”
